International students in Canada
can apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) if :
- Spouses or common-law partners of temporary foreign workers in a TEER 0, 1, 2, 3 occupation, according to the National Occupation Classification (NOC);
- The spouses or common-law partners of foreign students engaged in full-time study;
- International students who have recently graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution
Students can
generally get only 1 PGWP in their lifetime with no option for renewal. [Due to the effect of Covid on Canadian labour market, a temporary measure has been taken to extend PGWP until December 2023 for eligible candidate.] Based on the length of the study, a PGWP may be issued for a minimum of 8 months and a maximum of 3 years.
Spouses
and common law partners of PGWP holders can apply for an open work permit.
The Canadian work experience gained with a PGWP in the following NOC category of jobs can be used to apply for permanent residence (PR) in Canada through EE:
- Managerial jobs (TEER 0)
- Professional jobs (TEER 1)
- Technical jobs and skilled trades (TEER 2, and 3)
